A scholar’s reflection

Studying in college is never an easy task, especially when you are studying in the country’s premier state university. Having only my aunt and uncle fully supporting me in my studies, I decided to pursue my tertiary education at the University of the Philippines Visayas, as I believe a quality education will give me endless opportunities to reach my goals in life.

My elementary and high school academic background guided me to choose the path of Accountancy. As I started studying at UPV, I took on the challenge of being independent in almost all aspects of being a UPV student. From staying at a college dormitory to almost working part-time, I did everything to finish my studies and make the most out of my allowance from Tito and Tita.

Throughout my early years in college, I tried to apply for different scholarship grants offered in school and availed only of CHED’s Half-Merit Study Now Pay Later Program. It helped me cover initially my lodging fees in the dormitory and supplemented my daily expenses in school. It was only in my third year that I was able to receive a full scholarship grant from One UPV Foundation (USA).

For the first time, one organization listened to my story and understood me—where I came from, and what I needed during those times. Aside from my tito and tita, my teachers in high school, my parents, mentors, and friends, One UPV believed in me. Through them, I was able to buy my laptop as well as necessary accounting books and other references. I was also able to attend accounting conventions, seminars, and conferences without worrying about how to pay registration fees. While I would like to believe that I would have still graduated with a bachelor’s degree without these opportunities, I know I would not have achieved the academic awards and distinctions that I attained if not for this scholarship grant.

I will always be thankful for the One UPV Foundation, its members, and to those who are continuously supporting it because it gave me a chance to achieve who I want to be. I am also thankful to the people who made it possible for me to avail of this opportunity. They all inspire me to always do my best and to never give up. I hope that the foundation will continue giving financial support to deserving students, especially in these trying times. I also hope that in the future, I will be able to give support to those students who are qualified, goal-driven, and know their purpose in life.
